Romans 1 in action

October 17, 2008

In The Finished Work of Christ, Francis Schaeffer's commentary on the first eight chapters of Paul's letter to the Romans, Schaeffer comments on the repeated phrase from Romans 1, "God gave them over." He wrote:

"Today, because our society as a whole has been 'handed over,' there is no wisdom from within. Any approach to our problems today that comes from within society is bound to be wrong. Any cure that comes from within society must by its very nature not work. You can only find the cure for the disease if you know what the nature of the disease is - and to know that, you need to move outside of society, into God's Word."

One only has to visit downtown Prince George to see the truth of these words in action. A story in the Prince George Citizen this week details the activities of the Prince George Needle Exchange on Third Avenue, which has now entered into the lucrative crack pipe business (lucrative for the company that manufactures the implements, at least). According to the newspaper article, the exchange is now giving away 20 to 50 crack pipes a day. One spokesperson for the exchange is quoted as saying, "We thought we would put out this little feeler to see if there would be any response... we thought we would do a trial run. This we did with a sample of 400 pipes. We got them on a Thursday and they were all gone by the Tuesday. We were blown away. We had no idea, back then, that so many people were smoking crack cocaine. We set about ordering a supply because it was clearly a service in demand."
